Tibeten Old Man

2006, Conté crayons on color paper, 18″ X 24″

This Tibetan old man is a drawing I made following a photograph of the same subject. I used chalk and conte on color paper. I like the quality of the texture, which echoes quite well with the subject’s course/weathered face. What I see in him is the depth of life under the harsh living condition (high UV, wind, etc.) at the highest plateau of the world. The facial expression is ambiguous. At times, I think he is sad and docile; at times, I think he is tough and fearless. From this individual , I think of a part of history that has changed the destiny of these peace-loving people.
